Navigate menopause with confidence. Learn about safe hormone therapy, heart health screenings, and personalized care at Women's Specialty Care SC.

Menopause is a natural transition, but it can feel overwhelming. Your body goes through major hormonal shifts that affect how you feel every day.

At Women's Specialty Care SC, we believe you should not have to just tough it out. Dr. Karen Mass and our team provide personalized menopause management to help you feel like yourself again. We serve patients in Lake Forest, IL, and Grayslake, IL, with compassionate, comprehensive care. Let's look at what you need to know to thrive during this new chapter.

What is the safest way to take hormone therapy?

Hormone therapy is a highly effective way to manage hot flashes and night sweats. However, the way you take estrogen matters for your safety.

In a 2022 systematic review of over 2.5 million women, oral estrogen pills were associated with an increased risk of blood clots. Estrogen delivered through a patch or gel did not show this increased risk. Oral estrogen goes through your liver first, which can increase clotting factors. A transdermal patch bypasses this process, making it a much safer option for many women.

We often prescribe FDA-approved bioidentical patches and micronized progesterone to ensure safe, precise dosing. We avoid custom-compounded mixtures because they lack federal safety oversight and consistent dosing.

Why does heart health matter during menopause?

Many women do not realize that menopause directly impacts their cardiovascular system. When estrogen levels drop, your risk of heart disease rises.

The American Heart Association notes that the loss of estrogen can accelerate plaque buildup in your arteries. To protect your heart, they recommend routine lipid panels to track your cholesterol.

If you have borderline risk factors, we may discuss a coronary artery calcium scan. This quick imaging test looks for physical plaque in your heart's arteries. Finding even a small amount of calcium helps us target your treatment, such as aiming for an LDL cholesterol level below 100 mg/dL.
